Course Description Contents: The MSc internship is a project in which the student demonstrates the ability to apply acquired competences in the context of a host organisation outside WU, in a potential future work field. The tasks performed during the internship are at academic Master level, are supervised at that level, and can range from executing one (research) project to a substantial contribution to a coherent set of projects. Project assignments should provide sufficient freedom for students to take an academic approach at Master level, i.e. to explore the context, weigh alternative approaches, reflect critically on choices etc., and should allow sufficient time for reflection. The academic Master level is evidenced by a report including a scientific underpinning and critical discussion of choices, approaches and results of the task(s)/project(s) performed. If the student contributes to more than one project, the report should focus on a main or overarching challenge for which the student can take ownership. The student implements reflective learning by evaluating their personal functioning in the host organisation in a reflection report. Despite the diversity of organisations in which students can do academic internships, these internships will have a common structure, which can be characterized by the steps the student takes: Where. The student enters an organisation and orients themself: what kind of organisation is this? What. The organisation has a main question, problem, dilemma or challenge (from here on: "the challenge") that needs to be addressed. The student first tries to identify that challenge and based on this defines the objective of the internship. How. The student explores how they will address the challenge, using the scientific background they acquired in their MSc programme and new knowledge/competences acquired during the internship, and in consultation with the host supervisor draws up a plan. Act. The student starts executing their plan. The added value of an academic internship is that the student goes beyond simple execution of the tasks provided, but rather proactively takes initiative before, during, and after execution of the project(s): looking critically, reflecting, weighing options and possibilities, taking a step back and observing what they are doing / going to do. Look back and conclude. Towards the end of the internship, the student looks back: to what extent did I address the challenge and achieve the objective? How well did the chosen approach work, and why? Look ahead. Finally, the student comes up with recommendations for the host organisation, based on the steps that the student made in the project(s). Reflect. Throughout the internship, the student reflects on personal learning outcomes and professional career ambitions. Learning Outcomes: learning outcomes After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to: Apply and further develop competences in the field of the MSc programme in a professional context. Conduct tasks and one or more project(s) at the level of a graduate of the student’s MSc programme in a professional manner and report on this in writing and in a presentation. Evaluate the context and relevance of the internship project tasks and its outcomes, both from a scientific and host organisation point of view. Reflect upon personal learning goals related to the development towards an academic professional. Activities: Preparation: the students delineates the internship challenge, defines the objective and draws up personal learning goals; Performance: the student executes their plan; Report: the student writes a report on the internship project; Oral presentation: the student presents the outcomes of the internship; Reflection report: the student reflects on the personal learning outcomes; Oral defence: the student discusses the activities in and results of the internship.
