Description

Molecular signal transduction, synaptic plasticity, early brain development, construction of neural circuits, modification of brain circuits as a result of experience, repair and regeneration in the nervous system. Course Objective: Course Goal: Develop a foundational understanding of neuronal communication and its adaptive mechanisms, progressing from basic electrochemical signaling to complex forms of plasticity in the developing and adult brain. Learning Goals Explain how electrochemical gradients drive ion currents and action potentials, and interpret key experiments revealing these mechanisms. Describe the process of synaptic transmission, including presynaptic release, postsynaptic responses, and downstream signaling pathways. Explain the principles of synaptic plasticity, and illustrate examples such as LTP and LTD in the hippocampus. Summarize the stages of neuronal development, including polarization, axon guidance, synapse formation, pruning, and network integration. Compare innate and learned behaviors, discuss experience-dependent plasticity and critical periods, and identify brain regions supporting adult neurogenesis and regeneration. Analyze seminal neuroscience papers, interpret figures and data, evaluate their conclusions, and present findings clearly in group settings. Integrate knowledge of neuronal function and plasticity to design, conduct, and interpret experiments on brain gene/protein expression over the lifespan, while reflecting on the scientific process. Assessment Information: Exam (60%) (75 Multiple Choice questions on lectures and Journal Clubs) Student presentation laboratory practical (20%), Journal club presentation (20%) Each grade needs to be at least 5.5 or higher to pass the course. Teaching Methods: Lectures (16 hours) Laboratory practical (16 hours) Journal clubs (12 hours) Student presentations (4 hours) Self-Study (120 hours) During journal clubs students present a ground breaking scientific paper related to one of the lectures. Presentation in English.
