Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. Basic knowledge of plant cell components and cell wall Learning objectives: https://www.uniud.it/it/didattica/corsi/area-scientifica/agraria/laurea/scienze-agrarie/corso/regolamento-didattico-corso/all-B2 Contents: 1st Module: Plant Biology I (Prof. Zancani): 1. The chemistry of life. 2. The properties of water. 3. Organic compounds and functional groups. 4. Macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. 5. Principles of bioenergetics and enzymology. 6. Components of the plant cell. 7. Plant tissues. 8. Functions of the membranes. 9. Glycolysis and fermentations. Mitochodnrial respiration. 10. Photosynthesis. C4 and CAM plants. 11. Cell division and cycles. Mitosis, meiosis. Life cycles of plants. 12. Xylem and phloem transport. 13. Regulation of growth in plants. 2nd Module, Plant Biology II (prof. Petrussa): 1. Plant anatomy and morphology of vegetative and reproductive organs in Spermatophyta*. 2. Introduction to plant taxonomy. 3. Cyanobacteria: general characteristics and life's cycle. 4. Algae and Lichens: general characteristics and life's cycle. 5. Bryophyta and Pteridophyta. 6. Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. 7. Distinctive features of principal families of the Italian flora. Note: *Lessons of first schedule (Plant anatomy) will be held along with lessons of Plant Biology I module Teaching methods: Class lectures. Practicals: analysis of plant samples, microscopic preparations, laboratory experiments. Practicals on herbaria preparation and identification of plant species by identification key and magnifiers. Assessment: 1st Module – Plant Biology I: Written test 2nd Module – Plant Biology II: Written Test for Plant Anatomy. Oral examination for Plant Taxonomy, herbarium (25 specimens) presentation, and species identification by dichotomous key. During the assessment, knowledge, understanding, ability to apply knowledge and presentation skills are assessed. The individual skills acquired are judged excellent (A+, 30 cum laude), excellent (A, 30-28), very good (B, 27-25), good (C, 24-22), fair (D, 21-19), sufficient (E, 18) or insufficient (F). The final grade is the average of the evaluations obtained in the individual modules, a judgment that is formed by taking into consideration all the acquired skills as a whole.
