Sociology of Education

Description

This subject belongs to the basic training module of the Bachelor's Degree in Primary/Child Education. The module's objective is to raise student awareness of the profession they will enter and the environments in which they will work. Special attention is given to the origin of the school as a social institution, its functions, present and future, and the teacher's role in the social environment. Students will acquire knowledge and tools to analyze, interpret, and understand contemporary society and place the school in its historical, social, and cultural context. Topics include social institutions and structures; the socialization process; the education system as a social subsystem; social change affecting education; sociology of classroom interaction, school organization, and curriculum; and relationships between inequality and education (social class, gender, ethnicity). The course also develops basic Teacher Degree skills such as formulating and presenting arguments, problem-solving within the study area, gathering and interpreting relevant data to make judgments on social, scientific, or ethical issues, public presentation of ideas, problems, and solutions, and acquiring habits and skills for autonomous learning.
