Learning outcomes: A student who has completed the unit is expected to: - have a thorough understanding of the principles of collaboration within the context of an ensemble including neurodivergent, physically divergent, and culturally diverse participants. - be able to draw on their own musical traditions, influences, creative ideas, or movement-based approaches to effectively collaborate in an ensemble with participants from diverse backgrounds and abilities. - have acquired skills in listening, co-composing, arranging, and improvising. - be able to actively contribute and learn to take on different roles within the ensemble. - be able to analyse and evaluate their own process and performances. Content: The All Abilities Band (AAB) is an inclusive, accessible music and movement ensemble that brings together people from neurodivergent, physically divergent, and culturally diverse backgrounds. All participants identifying with any form of disability are welcome, as well as all types of musicians and dancers. A diverse range of instruments and voices are used in the band, including acoustic, electronic, and specially made accessible instruments designed specifically for the band, to ensure inclusivity and participation for all. Band members create their own music and movement drawing on inspiration from the diversity of the ensemble and the world around us, facilitated by musicians from Sibelius Academy’s Global Music Programme. Completion methods: Active participation in an ensemble including neurodivergent, physically divergent, and culturally diverse participants. Class attendance and independent practising of the repertoire At least one public performance with the ensemble each year Further information: AAB is built into community engagement studies in the global music programme and offered as an elective to students from all study lines.
