Law, Film and Popular Culture (Level 2)

Overview: The focus of this class is on the way in which law and justice are presented in the media and the impact of this representation and perception of the law. The class examines both the formal legal framework governing this presentation as well as the specific empirical forms encountered in the 21st century looking principally at film and T.V through applying socio-legal analysis. While discourse will include wider popular culture, the primary emphasis throughout the module will be on films. Students will be required to watch a film before each lecture, with the film serving as the platform for lecture discussion Learning Outcomes: The course will focus on imparting a knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts employed within media law and cultural studies, including the development of these concepts and their application - The course will cover the intellectual skills of identifying, retrieving and applying socio-legal analysis to primary and secondary cultural sources - The course aims develop broader cognitive abilities including examining controversial issues particularly through tutorial work - Students will collate and integrate information from a variety of different sources into tutorials and assessment - Students must undertake independent research and manage their learning through preparation for, and participation in, the tutorials and through completion of the written assignment and oral discussion - The course objectives also include developing communication and literacy skills by emphasising the written and oral presentation skills of students through work in tutorials, in completing the written assignments and oral recorded discussion Assessment: The class is assessed via two pieces of work. Assessment 1: An allocated pair/group podcast-style recording of up to 10 minutes + an annotated bibliography (50%) Assessment 2: An individual assignment of up to 1,500 words (50%)
