Description
Overview: This module aims to develop a broad range of knowledge and skill concerned with studentship, professionalism and ICT and a technical working knowledge of product development resources, processes and procedures. Syllabus: Learning Orientation and Communication - Introduction to degree: concept and structure of degree/s; learning paths; career paths. - Learning to learn: attitudes to learning; learning techniques; structure of modules; pedagogical approaches. - Professional career planning: Personal Development Planning (PDP). - On-campus and on-line University learning facilities: Strathclyde and Glasgow city libraries; LearningOnline - Student and professional Health & Safety: H&S practicesl DMEM Safety Regulations; Risk Assessment. - Professional report writing: report writing skills; referencing skills; CV writing skills. - Professional presentations: oral presenting; PowerPoint techniques. Design, Fabrication and Production Processes - Practical engineering workshop skills: turning, milling, drilling, fabrication, measurement, plastic processes, and simple electronic manufacture - Application via design and make project - Product Autopsy: identification of standard engineering components; development of engineering language; theoretical explanation of mass-production processes. Digital Product Development - Introduction to professional digital product development systems, the DDMS and CAD - Starter skills in parametric 3D modelling and 2D drawing. - Prototype and part fabrication via Rapid Prototyping (RP) and via Computer Numerical Control (CNC). Learning Outcomes: On completion of the module the student is expected to be able to: LO1: Identify a wide range of learning, orientation and communication skills and practically apply them for student learning and work as an engineering and product development professional. LO2: Identify and explain wide range of design, fabrication and production processes and theoretically and practically apply them to engineering and product development projects. LO3: Identify and explain a wide range of digital product development techniques and practically apply them to engineering and product development projects. Assessment: 5 x Courseworks = 70% 1 x Projects = 15% 1 x Presentation = 15% Students need to gain a summative mark of 40% to pass the module. Students who fail the module at the first attempt will be re-examined during the August diet. This re-examination will consist entirely of coursework and viva.
