
Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer

Overview: This module aims to provide an introduction to the properties and behaviour of fluids and the principles of heat transfer and the application of these concepts to practical, engineering problems. Syllabus: The module will teach the following: • Introduction to fluids o Properties o Pascal’s principle o Archimedes’ principle • Bernoulli’s equation • Macroscopic and differential balances • Viscosity • Dimensional analysis • Flow through pipes and fittings • Turbulence • Drag • Pumps • Conduction and Fourier’s law • Convection • Condensation, boiling, and evaporation • Heat exchangers • Radiation • Stirred tanks Learning Outcomes: On completion of the module the student is expected to be able to LO2 To appreciate and be able to quantitatively describe the properties of fluids and LO3 To understand the mechanisms of heat flow and be able to quantitatively describe heat transfer LO4 To apply the principles of fluid flow and heat transfer to the design and rating of equipment LO1 To be able to carry out mass, momentum, and energy balances Assessment: ASSESSMENT: Examination 70% weighting Coursework 20% + 10% weighting
