Description
Overview: To introduce design calculation methods in water engineering and hydrology. To be able to perform design calculations for uniform channel flow and for steady flows in pipes and in pipe networks. Perform design calculations in engineering hydrology, to develop competency in calculations for the unit hydrograph, flood frequency analysis, reservoir routing. To have an understanding of the geological controls on groundwater resources and groundwater flow. Syllabus: Boundary layers, shear flows Pipe flow ? Stanton & Moody diagram Flow and pressure distribution in pipes and pipe networks Frictional head loss in pipes including part-full pipes Pipe network analysis Flow and pressure distribution in pipes and pipe networks Pipe network analysis Uniform flow in channels - Manning?s equation Hydrology: Groundwater; the Unit Hydrograph; reservoir routing; flood frequency analysis. Flooding and flood prevention. Learning Outcomes: Understand significance of Manning n value & concept of resistance in rivers and channels. Calculate depth of uniform flow using Manning equation and energy principles. Understand energy loss mechanisms in channels and pipes Apply Stanton and Moody diagram to a flow problem Estimate optimum channel cross section Classify pipe flows. Calculate flow and pressure distribution in pipes and pipe networks. Apply methods to part full pipes. Undertake Unit Hydrograph analysis. Undertake reservoir routing calculations. Understand causes of flooding. Undertake flood frequency analysis.
