Many questions in modern-day Accounting are complex and require careful and well-planned analysis. By undertaking a dissertation project in Accounting, you’ll learn about the various research approaches in this subject before undertaking your own research project. This module spans two semesters. In the first semester, you will become familiar with research methods in Accounting and Finance. You will explore topics including how to: formulate research questions; search and summarise the literature and the current knowledge in a subject; choose research strategies and data consistent with your project; use quantitative and qualitative research methods. In the second semester you’ll undertake your own research project as part of your written dissertation. An academic member of staff will become your supervisor and will be available for questions and guidance. At the end of the module, you’ll have answered your research question and will have the skills to approach and conduct further research in Accounting. Core Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the module, you should be able to: critically review academic literature and evaluate research approaches used therein; classify and compare research methods and design and determine ethical issues in research; identify and evaluate data collection methods in accounting and finance; independently and critically analyse a research topic and generate a piece of academic work. We will use these throughout the semester to help identify those students who have limited participation so that we can provide appropriate support and guidance.
