Architectural and Landscape Design 01

Description

This module is designed to introduce students to architecture and landscape architecture through different approaches to spatial design. The module will be structured through a series of studio workshops and short design projects, to introduce and develop a core set of skills and techniques including: building and landscape surveying, freehand and technical drawing, model making and using a range of expressive media. The module aims to widen students' perceptions of architecture and landscape by developing knowledge of existing buildings, designed landscapes, people, nature and materiality. The module also explores the disciplinary breadth of architecture and landscape architecture and the role of professional practice in tackling contemporary social and environmental issues. Design, planning and management precedent studies will be introduced to familiarise students with a range of work and to inform design practice and theory. An integrated project brief taught collaboratively across the School of Architecture and Landscape will be the core focus of learning and teaching in the second half of the semester. A combined project brief will require students to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired to develop and communicate an integrated architecture and landscape proposal within an existing site context. The key focus will be in developing an understanding of a design process and crafting different spatial experiences in response to site analysis, a client brief and their design ambition. Students will be expected to design with a limited palette of trees and to refine their building interventions to engage with a desire for a circular economy and environmental sustainability.
