Blak Rights and the Fight for Justice

Justice? Or Just Us? This course asks what human rights really mean in theory and in practice, and how they have been applied or denied, to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. Students will examine international mechanisms such as the United Nations and Australia’s responsibilities as a nation state, while also engaging with Aboriginal responses that assert self-determination and demand justice. Along the way, they will learn from the long history of Aboriginal activism and community action and consider how rights frameworks continue to be reshaped by Blak voices and movements today. All ABOR courses are developed in alignment with the Wollotuka Institute’s Cultural Standards Framework, ensuring respect for cultural principles and practices.
