Intro to the African Past

Description

This course is a survey of the social, economic, political, intellectual and cultural heritage of the African peoples from pre-history to the present. The emphasis is on the internal dynamics of the African society through five millennia, as well as the impact of external forces on African life. Themes of particular interest: the roots of African culture, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the African Diaspora in the New World, the European Conquest and the character of the colonial order and the ongoing struggle to end the legacy of alien domination.
