Description

This subject is an introduction to the study of meaning, looking at the main linguistic approaches to the study of meaning, techniques of semantic analysis and argumentation, and problems of accounting for some selected areas of linguistic meaning. Topics include classical approaches to meaning, prototype semantics, cognitive linguistics, formal semantics and linguistic categorisation across languages. Teaching Period: 2 March 2026 to 31 May 2026 Assessment Information: Description Timing Percentage Lecture quizzes 500 words (equivalent) During the teaching period 10% Analysis 1 750 words (equivalent) Between weeks 5 and 6 20% Analysis 2 750 words (equivalent) Between weeks 8 and 10 20% Exam 2000 words (equivalent) During the examination period 50% Hurdle requirement: 2. Assessment hurdle requirement: All pieces of assessment must be submitted to pass the subject. Attendance hurdle requirement: This subject has a minimum requirement of 80% attendance at tutorials, seminars, or workshops. There is an expectation that students attend lectures.
