Language in Aboriginal Australia

Description

This subject develops an appreciation of the role of language in Aboriginal Australian societies, traditionally and today. On completion of the subject, students should have a general knowledge of the languages of Australia's First Nations, an understanding of the ways in which social and cultural factors affect language structure and use in Aboriginal Australia, and an appreciation of the complexities of Australian Aboriginal cultures and knowledges as they are reflected in their languages. Teaching Period: 2 March 2026 to 31 May 2026 Assessment Information: Description Timing Percentage Lecture quizzes: Weekly online multiple choice questions 150 words (equivalent) During the teaching period 5% Assignment 1: Problem-solving assignment 700 words Between weeks 5 and 6 20% Assignment 2: Murrinhpatha language 650 words Between weeks 8 and 9 15% Final essay 2500 words During the examination period 60% Hurdle requirement: 1. Attendance hurdle requirement: This subject has a minimum requirement of 80% attendance at tutorials, seminars, or workshops. There is an expectation that students attend lectures. Each submitted assessment must be complete, constitute a genuine attempt to address the requirements of the task. Throughout the semester N/A Additional details Late penalty requirement: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at five per cent (5%) of the possible marks available for the assessment task per day or part thereof and will not be accepted after 20 University business days from the original assessment due date without written approval.
