Overview: Can you transform a space, change people's mood completely, without touching it? If you change the light, you can totally transform the feeling of a space. Understanding how to do this in architecture gives you the power to create designs that people enjoy. And it may help you win an award - such is the power of light. In this module, you will learn about the physical nature of light, how we can reflect and control it, and how to measure the average daylight factor (ADF) of a room, predicting if it will be adequate for comfortable use. You will also be introduced to global environmental issues, and how passive solar design allows us to provide comfortable buildings with reduced environmental impact. Alongside your technical work, you will also study the aesthetic qualities of light in architecture, learning how to communicate this through a range of traditional and digital tools. Method of assessment: Report: physical model, Measurement and Calculation of ADF (750 words) worth 50%. This Assessment is Pass Compulsory. Portfolio: analogue and digital representations of light in architecture (10-15 images illustrating beauty of light) worth 50%. This Assessment is Pass Compulsory. Reassessment Method: Like-for-like Learning outcomes: On successful completion of this module, you will be able to: 1. Understand the physical nature of light and its properties and how to manipulate them to enhance the beauty of a space; 2. Measure and predict if there will be adequate daylight in your building design; 3. Explain how to help reduce local and global environmental concerns by using passive design; 4. Use skills learned in life drawing, fine art with different media and through chiaroscuro to visualise and communicate your building designs; 5. Use digital skills to illustrate how light can affect an architectural space Notes Credit level 4 . Certificate level module usually taken in the first stage of an undergraduate degree.
