Architecture Foundations

Description

Overview: What is architecture, where does it come from, and how has it changed through advancements in technology? Architecture Foundations will explore these central questions through visual documentation, layout practices, assembly skills and fabricating techniques. This studio-based module will offer you the exploratory environment to question forms of architectural creativity and visualization skills, while gaining historical and contemporary context to how architecture has evolved over time. You will learn through a series of studio practical skill workshops, technique sessions, and contextual seminars on how to engage in what is architecture in the 21st century. Using your own creativity, you will explore in both analogue plan work, digital skills and fabricating 3D software to demonstrate your perspective on what architecture is. You will learn how challenging what architecture is, and how sustainability of the environment can be reflected in architecture to limit its impact on climate change. Method of assessment: Main Assessment Methods: Project 1. Details drawings, InDesign and Photoshop software layouts (30%) Project 2. Details: Scale Model Production, Plans, 3D Illustrations (30%) Sketchbook. Details: Weekly Sketching (20%) Visual Recording with Annotated Commentary. Details: Photographs – Materials and Surfaces (20%) Reassessment methods: Like-for-like Learning outcomes: On successfully completing the module, students will be able to: 1) Generate ideas, concepts, proposals, solutions as self-initiated activity in response to set project briefs. 2) Demonstrate proficiency in creating visualizations (plans and models) in both analogue and digital curriculums. 3) Acquire visual and physical abilities to select and use materials, processes, and environments in response to set briefs. 4) Establish connections between idea intentions, engaging in processes, that demonstrate methods of dissemination. 5) Research visual skills, techniques and practices and reflect on contemporary studio practices. Notes Credit level 3 . Foundation level module taken in preparation for a degree. ECTS credits are recognised throughout the EU and allow you to transfer credit easily from one university to another.
