Thanks to the high concentration of international actors, Geneva is known as one of the capitals of global governance and therefore is a privileged place to analyse and critically assess its current dynamics. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the multilateral system established after the Second World War appears to be in crisis. The UN and the International Geneva ecosystem have always had their detractors, but criticism has recently intensified. The actions taken by Donald Trump's America since 2025 have amplified this sentiment in a major shift of the international liberal order established after the Second World War. In this context, the 'International Geneva' course analyses the history of multilateralism since the beginning of the 20th century and its current dynamics, and examines the evolving role of International Geneva in promoting global governance. The course aims at placing multilateralism in a long-term context in order to understand its foundations, origins and developments. It also aims at highlighting to what extent different topics within International Geneva are interconnected and at identifying common challenges that international actors working in different fields are currently facing. The course benefits from the extensive experience of officials belonging to international organizations who will regularly intervene during the semester to present the specific concerns faced by their institutions.
