Learning outcomes Learning outcomes: After completing the course, the student 1. is familiar with the study practices of their academic subject and the goals, structure and content of their degree 2. is familiar with fellow students and staff members in their academic subject and the university community 3. is familiar with the university as a learning environment and is able to use the tools and electronic resources essential for studies 4. has acquired means to improve their academic study skills and ability 5. is able to use the guidance, tutoring and support services provided by the University of Eastern Finland and its interest groups to plan their personal study path Content The student learns about the university as a learning environment and community through academic subject tutoring and peer tutoring, online materials, various orientation events and other related material. Particular emphasis is on the study practices and student services specific to the student’s academic subject. Students also learn about the know-how and skills needed in university studies, as well as how to develop and maintain study ability. Modes of study Modes of study: Students familiarise themselves with the online material before studies begin and participate in the instruction, peer tutoring and orientation events held by their academic subject. The completion methods will be further specified by the relevant faculty/subject. Evaluation criteria: Pass/fail. The faculty/programme/main subject will publish detailed evaluation criteria, is in charge of the evaluation and registration. Teaching methods Instruction sessions by the academic subject approx. 8 hours, peer tutoring approx. 10 hours, familiarisation with online material approx. 3 hours, orientation events approx. 6 hours Learning material 1. Materials from the study programme/subject (for example Smart Start guide, Study Communities) Further information Teachers: Faculties and academic subjects, Student and Learning Services, other parties with the university and its interest groups Time: Typically the first semester of the first academic year. Orientation to studies begins in August before arriving on campus by reading the provided online material. Teaching on campus begins in early September on a date to be announced separately. A detailed event calendar for autumn will be published in August. Students beginning their studies in January (in the spring semester) should read the same online material and contact their academic subject upon beginning studies.
