Description

Social work is an internationally oriented discipline and profession. In various historical contexts since the late 19th century, social work has focused on the interconnections between local and regional developments and their impacts on global processes. International crises, issues of global poverty and development, as well as the increase of new forms of worldwide mobility and migration have become central fields of action for social work that transcend national borders. Professional practice in local and regional contexts is therefore increasingly influenced and shaped by national and international events and developments in the 21st century. This applies to classic fields of social work such as poverty, employment, health, and education, which are addressed in relation to individuals, families, or social groups and in the context of different life stages such as childhood, youth, adulthood, and old age. These fields share the goal that professional action addresses existing and emerging forms of marginalization to improve the living conditions of those affected.
