Topics in Clinical Psychology

Content: Lectures cover recent developments in clinical psychology theory and practice. Early lectures generally address broad topics, such as Community Psychology and Technology in Clinical Psychology. After reading week, the theoretical and clinical topics are more specific, covering, for example, the treatment of specific disorders, like PTSD and depression, as well as novel theories of psychopathology (e.g. Network Theory). The topics build upon those taught in PSYC0015, Health & Clinical Psychology, so it is an advantage to have taken this module but it is not a formal requirement. Teaching delivery: This module is taught in 15 hours of in-person lectures spread over 10 teaching weeks (usually in the format of 5 1-hour lectures in one half of term and 5 2-hour sessions in the other half of term). Indicative Topics: Indicative lecture topics – based on module content in 2024/25, subject to possible changes: Research Methods, Autism, Neuropsychiatry, Psychedelic Psychotherapy, Technology, PTSD, DIT, Network Theory, Bipolar Disorder, Psychopharmacology, Psychosis, Intellectual Disabilities, Dementia, Social Media & Mental Health, ACT & Third Wave Therapies. Module Aims: The module provides a firm foundation in the applied psychological science of mental health. The objectives for students to reach by the end of the module are: 1)    To understand modern clinical psychological research methods 2)    To understand the overall mental health landscape in the 2020s and beyond, in terms of our shifting understanding of mental health problems, and the factors that contributor to poor mental health. 3)    To appreciate the challenges of meeting the ever-increasing demand for mental health treatment through the use of novel or ‘transgressive’ approaches such as community psychology, technology, and psychopharmacology (including psychedelic drugs)
