Description

This module introduces the physical foundations of the laws of electricity for students pursuing a path where concepts such as electric field, current, potential, and voltage are necessary for further study. The laws of electricity are considered in a broader context than just electronics, to appreciate their relevance in the study of systems related to Physics, Chemistry, or Information Sciences. -1- Electrostatics: Concept of electric charge. Electron. Ions. Presence of electric charges in materials (solid, liquid, gas). Electric field vector. Coulomb's law. Principle of charge conservation. Electric potential. Field lines and equipotentials. -2- Electrodynamics: Definition of electric voltage. Flow of electric charges. Electric current density vector. Electric current intensity. Ohm's law. Local Ohm's law. Concepts of electrical resistivity and conductivity. Concept of electrical resistance. Joule effect. Electrical efficiency. -3- Relationships between current and voltage in steady-state DC electrical circuits. Diagramming and modeling. Resistor combinations. Kirchhoff's laws. Ideal and real generators.
