Introduction to Prehistory

Description

Presentation: This introduction aims to familiarize students with the chrono-cultural framework of Prehistory as well as the various approaches to archaeological remains. The training is organized as lectures covering the Pleistocene and Holocene, with an introduction to dating methods, and also includes field trips to familiarize students with major sites, museums, and contexts from different periods. Three instructors teach the course: C. Vérati: Geochronology; J. Guibert-Cardin: Early Prehistory; S. Bonnardin: Recent Prehistory. Course coordinators: Sandrine Bonnardin, Chrystele Verati. In-person: 30 hours of lectures, 23 hours of tutorials, 12 hours of practical work. Prerequisites: None. Objectives: By the end of this course, I should be able to reconstruct the major phases of Prehistory from the data presented in class; understand how discourse in Prehistory is constructed; grasp different dating methods and their applications; have a clear vision of Prehistory, its corpora, and related disciplines; master the main vocabulary and concepts.
