Description

At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the dynamics of major transitions (ecological, climatic, energy, social) from a historical, geopolitical, and scientific perspective. 2. Identify the causes and consequences of major environmental disturbances (climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, pollution), linking scientific data and societal issues. 3. Use systems thinking to analyze interactions between natural, technical, and social systems, considering feedbacks, thresholds, and locking effects. 4. Develop critical thinking towards discourses, proposed solutions, and social representations of the transition, notably through controversy mapping and complex issue analysis. 5. Frame environmental problems rigorously and contextually, integrating diverse scales (local, global), temporalities, and stakeholders while mastering orders of magnitude. 6. Recognize the social and political dimensions of technical and ecological choices, reflecting on their acceptability, justice, and ethical implications. 7. Integrate knowledge from various disciplines (hard sciences, social sciences and humanities, engineering, law, economics...) to build an interdisciplinary vision of sustainable development challenges. 8.
