Description

The Australian National Internships Program provides students from any discipline with the opportunity to undertake a significant research project within a work place. Academic credit will be awarded towards the students' degrees. Placements are in national institutions (eg government departments and agencies), peak industry bodies, large industry organisations, public policy-focussed NGOs, or international organisations (eg embassies). As part of a real-world experience, students will have the opportunity to work in an office environment, learn to prioritise tasks and deadlines, develop the skills to express themselves concisely and provide a succinct précis of a complex topic. Admission to this course is selective due to the high academic standards required to successfully complete the course. The research topic is agreed between the Intern and the placement and topics usually have a focus relevant to both the organisation and the intern. Students attend workshops to assist with the write up of their report and enhance professional skills. Internship placements may be offered within Australia or overseas, and workshops will be delivered over the course of a semester or in intensive mode. This course is available for cross-Institutional enrolment. The mandatory orientation workshop runs during Orientation Week. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to: demonstrate and apply, with sophisticated understanding, a range of applied research and professional skills; source, analyse, synthesise, and interpret information from diverse sources; think, write, and argue about complex public policy issues and questions; and engage professionally with stakeholders on policy-relevant topics. Work Integrated Learning Placements ANIP is an internship program where students undertake a vocational placement and research project supported by an academic course on professional skills development. Host organisations include the Parliament of Australia, government agencies, ACT Legislative Assembly, diplomatic missions, NGOs, think-tanks, peak body organisations, cultural institutions, and university research centres. Students develop their experience of the systems, processes, activities and strategy of their host organisation through their internship placement. The co-designed research project enables students to build their skills in stakeholder engagement, project management and data analysis. The internship provides an opportunity for preparation towards a career in government, diplomacy, the voluntary sector, international organisations, universities or the cultural sector. Other Information A permission code is required to enrol in this course. For some internships, in order to be given permission to enrol, the student will be required to demonstrate to the course convenor sufficient understanding of the social, cultural and political context of the country in which the internship is to be taken. This may be demonstrated by completion of relevant courses or by having spent significant time in the relevant country.
