Language Teaching in Context

Description

Synopsis: Students will advance their knowledge of essential principles and methodologies for language teaching, with a particular focus on developing awareness of the different needs of language learners in a variety of contexts. Students will critically evaluate pedagogical approaches in relation to learner needs and learn to adapt language lessons in order to meet those learners’ needs. While the focus will be on English language teaching, the principles can be applied more broadly to the learning of other languages. Notes: Available to visiting and exchange students who have prior teaching experience or have pursued an introduction module on language pedagogy at their home institution. Identify and critique essential principles of modern EFL teaching. 2. Critically evaluate various methodologies and pedagogical approaches used in EFL teaching. 3. Critically analyse the English language in terms of grammar, lexis and phonology with reference to learner perception of these features. Transferable Skills: By the end of this module, you will have had the opportunity to: • Analyse language data closely to enhance their skills of manipulating and understanding language. • Critically evaluate academic texts. • Manage your own learning self-critically. • Research focused topics in appropriate books, journals and electronic sources. • Take notes effectively, in classes and from your own readings. • Extrapolate a coherent argument based on a range of evidence, both orally and in writing. • Work independently, demonstrate initiative, self-organization and time-management. • Work with others to achieve common goals through group and teamwork.
