Description

An examination of the character and functions of the Canadian welfare state. Theoretical explanations of the welfare state. The historical development of the Canadian welfare state. Proposals for social policy reform and their implications. Learning Hours: 120 (36 Lecture, 84 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite (Level 3 or above and 6.0 units of POLS at the 200-level or above and a minimum GPA of 2.00 on all units in POLS) or permission of the Department. Exclusion GNDS 421 /3.0. Course Learning Outcomes: - Identify the major players in the social policy arena. - Compare and contrast major theoretical approaches to understanding the welfare state. - Describe how our social protections have evolved. - Identify factors that drive change in social policy. - Explain the major challenges that we face as a society, like poverty, inequality, disadvantage, work insecurity, and joblessness. - Develop skills to critically analyze social policy and think creatively about alternatives to problems. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
