Methods in Mathematical Physics I
Description
Methods of mathematics important for physicists. Complex arithmetic, series expansions and approximations of functions, Fourier series and transforms, vector spaces and eigenvalue problems, ordinary differential equations and Green's functions. Learning Hours: 120 (36 Lecture, 12 Tutorial, 72 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite ( MATH 221 or MATH 227 or MATH 280 ) and ( MATH 225 or MATH 231 or MATH 232). Exclusion MATH 334; MATH 338; PHYS 312. Course Learning Outcomes: - Algebraically manipulate complex numbers and complex exponentials. - Apply the standard methods of mathematical physics, such as Green's functions, to solve ordinary differential equations. - Apply the techniques of linear vector spaces to problems in classical and quantum mechanics. - Compute Fourier series and transforms of elementary functions. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
