Linguistic Analysis and Argumentation

Description

This course explores the forms of reasoning and evidence used in constructing and evaluating scientific arguments in linguistics, through discussion of articles that represent significant innovations and controversies in linguistic theory. Emphasis is on the structure of arguments, rather than on the analysis of individual languages or phenomena. Learning Hours: 120 (36 Seminar, 84 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite ( LING 320 and LING 340 ) or permission of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
