Description

Contemporary China aims to place the dynamics of recent social and economic change in historical perspective. Rather than proceeding both thematically and chronologically, it familiarizes students with the deep continuities with the phenomena such as urbanization, environmental challenges, cultural expectations, and gender norms. Learning Hours: 120 (48 Online Activity, 72 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite Level 2 or above. Course Learning Outcomes: - Identify trajectories of change in the history of China since 1900. - Summarize key points with an emphasis on distinctive aspects of Chinese experiences in the contemporary era. - Understand China’s present systems and challenges in global comparative perspective. - Interpret and anticipate trends of change in contemporary China. - Integrate knowledge of China with a widening understanding of the world and the study of history. - Analyze primary sources and marshal evidence from secondary sources to support written arguments. - Apply critical thinking skills to a variety of writing assignments and in class discussion forums to reflect and evaluate information being presented in the course. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
