Description

Studies focused on Modern and Contemporary literature that do not fit within the established rubrics (British, Canadian, American, Postcolonial, Indigenous). For detailed information, consult the Department. NOTE This course is repeatable for credit under different topic titles. Learning Hours: 120 (36 Seminar, 84 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite Registration in an ENGL Specialization, Major, or Joint Honours, and ENGL 200 /6.0 and ENGL 290 /3.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in 9.0 units of ENGL. Course Learning Outcomes: - Explain the historical, political, religious, and intellectual influences that shaped literary culture in specific periods. - Explain how literary texts assigned in the course participate in social or political movements, or are otherwise implicated in social or historical change. - Demonstrate an understanding the critical and theoretical methodologies that are most productive in analyzing the course's topic, and deploy these methodologies in written assignments. - Participate in current scholarly debates in the field. - Write thesis-driven essays that combine secondary research with the analysis of primary texts. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
