Description

A study of poetry, prose, and drama from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Learning Hours: 240 (72 Lecture, 168 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite Registration in an ENGL Specialization, Major, or Joint Honours, and ENGL 200 /6.0 and ENGL 290 /3.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in 9.0 units of ENGL. Course Learning Outcomes: - Identify key features of Modernist genres of poetry, prose, and criticism, employing appropriate literary terminology. - Assess the influence of Modernist writers’ life experiences—including their politics, gender, class, and cultural affiliations—on their writing. - Identify connections between the literary art and literary criticism produced by writers who worked in both genres. - Evaluate the scholarly interpretations and critical frameworks that have been most influential on illuminating Modernist writing. - Communicate interpretations of Modernist literature in thesis-driven essays that combine the close reading of primary sources with some secondary research. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
