Description

A study of British nineteenth-century fiction featuring selected writers from Jane Austen to Thomas Hardy. Learning Hours: 240 (72 Lecture, 168 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite Registration in an ENGL Specialization, Major, or Joint Honours, and ENGL 200 /6.0 and ENGL 290 /3.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in 9.0 units of ENGL. Course Learning Outcomes: - Identify the major themes, genres, narrative conventions, and literary devices associated with nineteenth-century British fiction. - Explain the roles of different forms of media in nineteenth-century Britain, especially in relation to social changes that took place during the period. - Evaluate the influence of historical, social, and cultural contexts on the work of nineteenth-century British writers. - Explain how stylistic, rhetorical, and formal features of the works studied contribute to the expression and development of a theme. - Communicate interpretations of nineteenth-century British literature in thesis-driven essays that combine the close reading of primary sources with some secondary research. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
