Evolutionary Medicine
Description
An exploration of human disease, illness, and injury, and the symptoms and treatments of medical conditions, with an evolutionary framework. Learning Hours: 120 (24 Lecture, 20 Tutorial, 10 Online Activity, 66 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite BIOL 206 /3.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the Biological Foundations List. Course Learning Outcomes: - Critically evaluate evidence available in the primary research literature to assess several evolutionary hypotheses to explain medical conditions, pathogen traits, and clinical outcomes. - Develop an appreciation for the benefits and impacts of the application of an evolutionary framework to considerations of human medical conditions. - Develop the ability to effectively synthesize and clearly communicate findings from their reviews and critical evaluation of scientific literature relevant to a topic of their choice in the field of evolutionary medicine. - Devise alternative hypotheses and predictions to address questions of relevance to evolutionary medicine, and analyze data and critically evaluate evidence to test among those hypotheses. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
