Natural Selection and Microevolution
Description
The mechanisms of evolutionary change - from genes to societies. How natural selection interacts with genetic and population processes to make organisms adapted to their environment and to create biological diversity. Learning Hours: 120 (36 Lecture, 6 Seminar, 18 Laboratory, 60 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite BIOL 206 /3.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the Biological Foundations List. Course Learning Outcomes: - Outline the historical development of the modern synthesis of evolution by natural selection. - Explain how evolution generates biological diversity. - Investigate genetic models simulating how gene frequencies change in populations over time. - Produce professional oral and written critiques of current evolutionary research literature. - Assess and discuss the impact of genomics technology on traditional population genetics. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
