Description
An introduction to the cellular basis of biological variation. The course explores the control of cell function exerted by the nucleus, the pathways for building and fuelling cells, and the control of integrative cellular events. NOTE Also offered online, consult Arts and Science Online (Learning Hours may vary). Learning Hours: 120 (36 Lecture, 12 Tutorial, 24 Online Activity, 48 Private Study) Requirements: Prerequisite BIOL 205 /3.0 or BCHM 218 /3.0. Course Learning Outcomes: - Apply bioinformatic skills using public gene databases to solve the structure of genes. - Assess the impact of genetic mutations on the ability of proteins to function normally. - Design experimental approaches to determine gene and protein function. - Differentiate nucleic acid and protein quantity and quality through the analysis of published results. - Explain how external signals impact gene expression and protein localization and function. - Invent a creative project to convey gene and protein function to a broad audience. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
