Field Biology I

Description

Two weeks of field work plus written assignments in one or two areas of study to be done when specialized modules are available in May, July, August or February. Studies may include ecology of birds, fish, insects, small mammals, plants, tundra and taiga, lakes and caves. The schedule of offerings for each year is available in January. NOTE Deposit: estimated cost $350. NOTE Field Work: cost varies depending on module selected ($400 to $6,000). Please visit the Department of Biology website for more information about this course. Requirements: Prerequisite Registration in a BIOL Major, BIOL Science Minor/General, or a BIMA, BIPS, BTEC, or EBIO Specialization, and BIOL 102 /3.0 and BIOL 103 /3.0. Course Learning Outcomes: - Build competency in sampling protocols and data analysis. - Gain a deep understanding of an ecological concept/problem. - Investigate relationships based on field-collected data. - Resolve a problem/question by designing, conducting, and interpreting data from a field study. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited. Education, Medicine, and Nursing are not open to incoming exchange enrolment.
