Introduction to Statistics

Description

An introduction to the analysis of data from real life situations. Covers study design, descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include probability, t-tests, regression, Chi-square tests, analysis of variance. Emphasis is in the foundation of statistical inference and practical application of statistical methods using statistical software. Course Learning Outcomes: - Identify the study design for a given question, and define the accompanying statistical population, sample, and observation unit. - Distinguish descriptive statistics from inferential statistics and define the role of each in quantitative analyses. - Compute descriptive statistics for a dataset using contemporary software and create the appropriate visualizations. - Identify and conduct the appropriate statistical test for a question and dataset using contemporary software. - Connect the results of statistical tests to the scientific question to draw appropriate conclusions. - Communicate the results of statistical analyses in written form. Assessment/Exam Context: Course assessment and examinations vary by course; Queen's notes that eligible exchange students whose first language is not English may receive extra final-exam time. Exchange Registration Note: Arts and Science courses are open to exchange students subject to prerequisites and space. Most courses should be in Arts and Science; other faculties may be limited.
