Academic Writing in English for Theology and Religious Studies

The principle aim of this course is to develop academic writing skills in English, with a special focus on writing within the faculty of Theology and Religious Studies. All students in the international programme complete a skills assessment during the week of orientation. If the results show that a student's academic writing skills in English requires improvement, then this course is obligatory. Students who are not obliged may take this course. Students who want additional support to improve their English are encouraged to explore the other options available within the faculty (e.g., Theo Writing Lab) and via the Leuven Language Institute. In this course, the student will: be introduced to tools and exercises to improve the grammatical and lexical precision of their writing; work with strategies to improve the structure of their written work (pre-writing, organization models, order of argumentation, formatting); learn how to integrate source evidence into academic writing (introducing scholars and sources in the body of text; integrating quotations, summaries and paraphrases; building  bibliographies); build reading engagement strategies and analysis skills in order to critically engage with academic texts and construct logical/theological arguments. improve their style of academic writing (clarity, succinctness, structure, proper transitional phrases, formal academic register);
