Biomolecular Technology and Analysis
Description
The aim of this course is to introduce the basic principles, techniques, and strategies used in molecular cloning, with mainly Escherichia coli as host organism. This knowledge forms the basis for attending lectures in which the various fields of application of gene biotechnology are highlighted and discussed. In addition, the course aims to provide the student with insight into the concepts and elaboration of current biochemical analysis techniques. These techniques use nucleic acids and proteins in the detection/analysis system and aim to determine the presence and/or amount of a(n) (bio)analyte in complex samples or to characterize a(n) (bio)analyte. They are applied in molecular biological research for rapid characterization/detection of biological objects and in the quantification of molecules in complex environmental samples as an alternative to chemical analysis techniques. The exercises give the students the opportunity to apply some standard techniques of biomolecular technology and analysis. After studying and processing this matter, the student is able to understand and accurately describe working with genetic information-carrying macromolecules, and to simulate practical constructions and analyses.
