Description

Students learn the key physical properties of organic molecules and bring them in relation to the chemical structure. Students learn to understand the mechanisms of organic chemistry, how to write and apply them. They rationalize reactivity, regioselectivity and stereoselectivity in organic reactions with concepts such as inductive, resonance effects, and steric effects, and hereby also use a number of general concepts, such as thermodynamic or kinetic control, nucleophilicity and electrophilicity, early or late transition state, etc. It is crucial to write the mechanisms correctly, as well as the identification of the functional groups and their reactions in complex organic molecules. The examples in the course are selected in the domain of bio-engineering. This module aims at integration and processing of this knowledge by making exercises in which all mechanisms at once can occur. The series of exercises are focusing on important themes from the applied chemistry. In the practical exercises mechanisms, covered in the practical lectures, are explained, some natural products are analyzed, separation techniques are used (distillation, chromatography, extraction) and some polymers are synthesized.
