Operational Systems
Description
After the completion of this course the student must be able to: indicate the objectives of an operating system; know the minimal hardware-support (program-interruptionmechanism, memory-protection,...) which is needed to perform a modern operating system; (functionally) describe the components of an operating system; explain the different designmethodologies; describe the most important algorithms used in the implementation of those components, weighing up their advantages and disadvantages and register the necessary hardware-support; make a sensible choice between these algortihms on basis of certain criteria and the available hardware; design parallel cooperating programs and provide the necessary synchronisation-assignments; compare operating systems with each other and give a sensible advice; understand the implementation of a simple educational operating system; make modifications and extensions to a simple educational operating system; work at a low level in the C programming language, including memory manipulation.
