Description

Through this course, students should acquire a thorough knowledge of the most important concepts in organic chemistry (reactivity of different functional groups, properties and mechanisms of the different types of reactions, conformational analysis, stereochemistry). The students must - know the reaction mechanism for different types of reactions (elimination, electrophilic addition, nucleophilic substitution, nucleophilic addition to carbonyl group of aldehydes and ketones, nucleophilic acyl substitution, electrophilic aromatic substitution and nucleophilic aromatic substitution) - can predict the regio- and stereochemistry of the product(s) formed in a reaction based on the reaction mechanism - be able to formulate an acceptable proposal for the reaction mechanism of an unseen reaction on the basis of the above-mentioned known reaction mechanisms - know the structure of different functional groups (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, allyl systems, haloalkanes, alcohols, thiols, ethers, sulfides, aldehydes, ketones, acids and acid derivatives, amines, aromatics) and use their transformations to formulate a proposal for the synthesis of a to formulate an organic molecule (see also last objective) - be able to distinguish on the basis of 2D representations between different conformations, constitutional isomers, stereoisomers. Based on 2D representations, the students must be able to determine the conformation (R,S) of stereoisomers, without using molecular models. - being able to order a series of organic molecules, ions, or molecular fragments according to different criteria (stability, acidity, basicity, aromaticity, reactivity in a certain reaction type) - be able to give an acceptable proposal for the synthesis of a given product starting from certain starting materials,
