Classical and Applied Mechanics
Description
The link is established from the basic dynamics and statics of material systems (General Physics: Mechanics), with the basic principles of the motion of rigid bodies. The student integrates his/her knowledge of mechanical systems and phenomena into his/her knowledge of mathematical techniques (especially linear algebra and calculus). The student deepens his/her understanding of the interdependence of seemingly unrelated phenomena, by bringing them together within the framework of classical mechanics, based on a single basic principle (principle of Hamilton). The student masters the elementary concepts of strength theory (section forces and moments, stresses and strains, defined in a three-dimensional space) and can apply them in simple concrete situations. He/she knows the equilibrium equations as a function of stresses, the relations between displacements and deformations (elongations and slip angles), and the relations between stresses and deformations through the laws of materials (Hooke's law). He/she knows the concept of elastic strain energy and the derived expressions as a function of stresses and deformations. The student can, through rehearsal of the subject matter arrive at independent mastery and application in technical problems.
