Organic Chemistry
Description
This course should familiarize the students with concepts of organic chemistry. Students have to - know the reaction mechanism for different types of reactions (elimination, electrophile addition, nucleophile substitution, nucleophile addition to a carbonyl group of aldehydes and ketons, nucleophile acyl substitution, electrophile aromatic substitution and nucleophile aromatic substitution) - be able to predict the regio- and stereo chemistry of created product(s) in a reaction based on the reaction mechanism - be able to formulate an acceptable proposition for the reaction mechanisms of an unseen reaction based on the afore mentioned known reaction mechanisms - know the structure of different functional groups (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, allyl systems, halogen alkanes, alcohols, thioles, ethers, sulfurs, aldehydes, ketones, acids and acid derivations, amines, aromates) and use their transformations to formulate a proposition of synthesis of an organic molecule (see also last goal) - be able to tell the difference based on 2D-representations between different conformations, constitutional isomeres, stereo-isomeres. Based on 2D-represenations, the students have to be able to determine tbe conformation (R, S) of stereo-isomeres, without using molecule models. - be able to rank a list of organic molecules, ions, or molecule fragments according to different criteria (stability, pH, basicity, aromaticity, reactivity in a certain reaction type) - be able to deliver an acceptable proposition on the systhesis of a given production based on certain starting materials
