Description

Knowledge and insight This course contributes to: - knowledge and insight in medical biotechnology and molecular medicine, focusing on gene transfer, and genetic manipulation in cells, animal models, and in gene therapy applications in human beings. - knowledge and insight in techniques and technology to study and interrogate cellular processes in cells, tissues, and organisms in health and disease - knowledge and expertise to apply these techniques in scientific research, to generate and engineer cellular and animal models to study the underlying molecular mechanism of cellular processes in human disorders and disease - knowledge and insight in the most recent research methods and techniques in biomedical research and their application to study human disorders in health and disease - knowledge and insight in the portfolio of gene transfer and gene therapy options with market approval and in the pipeline to treat human diseases - knowledge and insight in the ethical aspects and issues concerning the use of animal models for scientific research in biomedicine - knowledge and insight in the ethical issues in gene and cell-therapy - knowledge and insight in biosafety concerns and issues of gene transfer methods in biomedical research (regulations, safe handling of biological/chemical materials) Skills This course contributes to the following skill set: Information skills - initiation in gathering and analysing relevant data (literature, research data) in the biomedical research Communication skills - constructive discussion and arguing, putting forward points of view on scientific literature/hypotheses Attitudes The graduate demonstrates - an honest and constructively critical attitude - a respectful and responsible attitude towards fellow students and others The graduate will be able to - apply the knowledge and insight to propose an approach to develop a cell- or animal model - apply this knowledge and insight to propose a gene transfer or gene therapy approach for a given disorder In this course students will get insight into the potential of recombinant DNA technology, gene manipulation/transfer, and therapy options in biomedical research and their applications in molecular medicine. The different procedures and their underlying mechanisms will be discussed and illustrated by recent examples.
