Description

The course aims to develop English language skills in the field of communication science, with a focus on academic and professional language. First, academic speaking and writing skills (e.g. structuring, positioning, formal style) are explored, and relevant vocabulary is acquired. Afterwards, these more general skills are applied in a range of academic, journalistic, and professional contexts in which appropriate, correct language use is expected. By the end of the course, students will be able to use formal, field-specific vocabulary in appropriate contexts (e.g. describing a graph or writing an academic paper, CV, press release, formal letter, or opinion piece) avoid common grammatical errors position and contextualise information for a specific audience distinguish between formal and informal English and write texts in the appropriate register structure texts and paragraphs efficiently through logical organization and the use of signposts formulate opinions on current affairs issues in a structured, convincing way use presentation language and structuring phrases correctly describe and analyse graphs and data write a formal, polite email compile a CV and simulate a job interview express themselves in spoken and written standard language These objectives are introduced to the students at the start of the course.
