In the ‘Financial institutions and markets’ course the student is familiarized with the terminology of the banking sector and the financial markets. These topics are studied from the point of view of the financial institution. As such the different financing sources for the banks and the different uses of those funds will be studied. That way the student gets to know the different financial products and loans offered by a bank. At the same time, the valuation of those financial products and the calculations needed for the valuation, are studied. Besides that, the different financial markets in which the bank is active are discussed as well as the different financial instruments traded, such as stocks and bonds, as well as their valuation. All this is illustrated with practical examples, which allows the student to solve financial problems using a broad financial basic knowledge. In this course, the following key objectives are (partially or fully) realized: Understands basic theories, basic terms, and basic concepts of each management domain, in particular with respect to the financial, operational, commercial and organisational activities, and applies them when solving (business) economics problems. The student understands the functioning of the financial markets and institutions and their mutual impact. Masters the basic concepts and the overall functioning of banking, the stock market and the insurance business as well as the characteristics and functioning of the most important financial products and financial markets. The student knows the most important concepts and products of the financial institutions and financial markets Using the principles of time value of money, interprets information from financial reporting and news coverage, and uses all this as input in financial issues. The student is able to solve analytical questions with respect to bankproducts and financial instruments based on the concept of time value of money. Detects the impact of regional, national and international environmental factors on corporate policies and estimates the complexity of operating in an international environment when putting together a strategy. The student is able to analyze the impact of the evolution of the international regulation in the financial sector on the management of the financial institutions. Shows interest in current affairs and broadens his background knowledge. The student is aware of the recent developments in the financial sector and the financial markets Is familiar with relevant ICT applications and uses the knowledge and skills to solve (business) economic problems. Estimates the impact of business operations on various stakeholders and society.
