This course contributes to the following outcomes: The course participant… 10.b Knows with respect to the two foreign languages the most common general lexis, the specialist lexis related to business studies and economics and the grammar and uses these accurately both in writing as well as in oral forms of communication. 10.c Critically reads scientific texts in the domains of business studies and economics and interprets and summarizes those in the language of education and in English. 7.a Collects sources and data critically and manages to evaluate their scientific relevancy. Explanation Bachelors in Handelswetenschappen must be able to function effectively in a business work environment where English is the primary language of business internal and external communication. As this is a business English course, upon completion, students actively master some 500 business terms around business, marketing, human resources, finance and operations management and a wide range of collocations and do so both in shorter (more scholarly) texts and in rather formal presentations that are closely related to a basic textbook theme. On completion of the OPO “English 1”, students will be able to ... - define, understand and actively use key business terms around business, marketing, human resources, finance and operations management and a wide range of collocations (10.b) - apply grammatical rules of the English language in oral and written communication (10.b) - independently search for and process (business) economic information (including scientific texts) (10.c, 7.a) - demonstrate academic communication skills, such as discussing quantitative data in writing, analysing business economic texts and issues, discussing and comparing scientific research articles and giving a presentation (10.b, 10.c, 7.a) - employ search strategies for solving linguistic problems and apply problem-solving skills The following elements from FEB's Educational ERS Framework will also receive our attention: Critical thinking - to assess information and arguments, identify assumptions and trade-offs, and question the status quo.
