Strategic Financial Management

Students can make strategic and tactical decisions in the financial management of a firm, evaluating both long-term alternatives and short-term financing decisions, including financial restructurings, share issuances and share buybacks.  Students are able to make decisions about mergers & acquisitions and asset sales. Upon completion of the course, a student is able to: understand the theory and empirical evidence of M&As and financial restructurings have the knowledge and the skills to evaluate merger and acquisitions decisions evaluate and propose a suitable divestiture strategy for a company taking into account both company characteristics and the general environment in which the company operates evaluate and interpret results of existing empirical event studies and is able to perform an empirical event study in the context of  M&A-related events assess the financial and organizational consequences of financial restructuring strategies and evaluate their suitability given the characteristics of the firm and the general environment in which the company operates evaluate the motives, the methods and the strategic and financial consequences of initial and seasonsed equity offerings distinguish between several motives for share repurchases and to evaluate the advantages, disadvantages and consequences of different repurchase methods evaluate and propose a suitable investment strategy to benefit from the insights provided by the literature on M&As and restructuring, both ex ante and ex post (merger arbitrage) assess the legal and regulatory environment of M&As structure the right method of payment for a deal evaluate and propose strategic and tactical M&A decisions guided by the overall strategy of the firm identify the most important M&A theories interpret the empirical evidence of M&As evaluate M&A deals
